With the departure of Marc Russo, the Yellowjackets became a trio. The kicker here is the "guest artist" Bob Mintzer (dmp recording artist, and noted big band leader and arranger), who would become an official member on the next Yellowjackets album. Basically, then, the Yellowjackets sound had not changed much, save for the more laid back approach Mintzer takes to woodwinds. (Where Marc Russo was more of a fiery technician who could shoot off riffs like a machine gun, Bob Mintzer opts for a more reserved and thoughtful approach.) The most striking difference of Greenhouse is the use of strings--the title track starts out with an orchestral overture, and the song "Indian Summer" with its orchestral accents. "Freda" is very different; the violin reminds me almost of a square dance fiddle! Like Four Corners, the "world" theme dominates a lot of the music and ideas on this album.
